Week 3: Monteverde and Playa Carillo

Conservation, Adventure & Coastal Paradise

1st Stop: Monteverde – A Hidden Jewel in the Clouds

Our journey continues with a scenic boat ride across the tranquil waters of Lake Arenal, taking us to the misty and magical world of Monteverde Cloud Forest. Perched high on Costa Rica’s continental divide, Monteverde is a lush wonderland of towering trees, rolling hills, and vibrant wildlife. This cloud forest is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, home to over 2,000 species of plants, 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, and more than 1,200 amphibians and reptiles. From the calls of howler monkeys in the distance to the iridescent flash of a resplendent quetzal flying overhead, Monteverde is pure magic. Just down the road lies Santa Elena, a lively town filled with delicious local restaurants, charming boutiques, and a welcoming community.

Community Service Project – Protecting the Cloud Forest

Sustainability Project

We’ll roll up our sleeves and volunteer with the Bosque Eterno de los Niños (BEN), the Children’s Eternal Rainforest, Costa Rica’s largest private nature reserve. Funded by donations from children around the world, this incredible 56,000-acre sanctuary is vital for preserving Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity. We’ll play an active role in conservation efforts by maintaining hiking trails, painting and repairing park structures, and learning how our work directly supports the fragile ecosystem. With the guidance of local environmental experts, we’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Monteverde Adventures – Soaring Above the Rainforest!

Monteverde Activities

Monteverde isn’t just about conservation, it’s also home to one of the most thrilling zip-line canopy tours in Latin America! Get ready to soar above the jungle as we take on the legendary Treetopia Canopy Tour, flying from treetop to treetop with unmatched views of the cloud forest below. Later, we’ll visit Selvatura Park, a peaceful wildlife sanctuary where we’ll come face-to-face with adorable sloths, playful monkeys, and vibrant tropical birds. In the evenings, we’ll explore the charming town of Santa Elena, unwind with breathtaking sunsets over the misty mountains, and soak in the laid-back, natural beauty of this special place.

2nd Stop: Playa Carillo – A Tropical Paradise on the Pacific

For the final stop on our epic journey, we head to Playa Carrillo, a hidden gem of Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. Located on the stunning Nicoya Peninsula, Playa Carrillo is famous for its serene beauty, crystal-clear waters, and palm-fringed shores. This is a place where golden beaches stretch for miles, the ocean sparkles under the sun, and the relaxed “Pura Vida” lifestyle is in full swing. Nearby, the lively surf town of Playa Sámara awaits, offering a mix of trendy cafes, local shops, and breathtaking ocean views.

Nammbu Beachfront Bungalows

We’ll check into Nammbu Beachfront Bungalows, an eco-luxury resort tucked within a lush tropical forest overlooking the Pacific. This boutique eco-lodge combines first-class hospitality with an incredible connection to nature, featuring stunning infinity pools, open-air dining, and private terraces with panoramic ocean views. Whether we’re lounging by the pool, enjoying fresh tropical fruit, or soaking in the coastal breeze, Nammbu is the ultimate beachfront retreat.

Community Service Project in Playa Carillo – Protecting the Sea Turtles

Volunteering at Ostional National Wildlife Refuge for Sea Turtles

Here, we’ll work with the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, one of the most important conservation sites in the world for leatherback and olive ridley sea turtles. This refuge plays a crucial role in protecting sea turtles and their nesting grounds, hosting one of the largest mass-nesting events, known as arribadas, in the world. Depending on the timing of our visit, we may have the opportunity to assist with egg excavation, data collection, or monitoring nesting sites. However, even if we aren’t there during the nesting season, our efforts are just as important! We’ll participate in beach clean-ups, recycling initiatives, and conservation projects that help maintain the fragile coastal ecosystem. Guided by local marine biologists, we’ll learn firsthand how our work supports the survival of these incredible creatures.

Playa Carrillo Adventures – Sun, Surf & Snorkeling!

Playa Carillo Activities

The adventure isn’t over yet! Playa Carrillo is known for its world-class waves, making it the perfect place for our epic surfing lesson. Professional surf instructors will teach us how to ride the waves like a pro at Playa Sámara, a safe, beginner-friendly beach with warm, inviting waters. In the afternoon, we’ll kayak across the shimmering Pacific to Isla Chora, a secluded island paradise where we’ll snorkel among colorful fish and coral reefs before enjoying a relaxing beach picnic. On our final night, we’ll celebrate with one last sunset over the Pacific, reminiscing about the unforgettable experiences, friendships, and memories we’ve made together.
